David Humphrey Ph.D.
David Humphrey is senior data scientist at Railinc Corp. He works with the most extensive collection of freight rail data available to help his colleagues and organizations like the Chicago Transportation Coordination Office and the Association of American Railroads on critical rail traffic issues that affect North America's largest railroads. Using data from Railinc's Umler® system, Humphrey also provides detailed quarterly fleet analyses of the North American freight rail system. He is a frequent featured speaker at industry events such as the Rail Equipment Finance Conference and presents regularly on data collected, maintained and administered by Railinc. Humphrey joined the company in 2001 as a business process analyst and became senior analyst in 2008.
Humphrey has more than 20 years' analytical experience in transportation, telecommunications, food processing, manufacturing and education. Before joining Railinc, he was an operations research analyst at Nortel Networks in Research Triangle Park, N.C. He has been an adjunct assistant professor at North Carolina State University and a visiting faculty member at the Naval Postgraduate School and the American University of Armenia.
Humphrey graduated from Purdue University with B.S. and M.S. degrees in industrial engineering. He earned a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University, where he wrote his dissertation on response-surface optimization. He holds a Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
