Guide For Railroads

The Guide for Railroads introduces new and existing railroads to valuable information for operating as a part of the North American railroad system.

The document describes the uses and requirements of an application or process, outlines Railinc's role and, where applicable, the various rules and procedures prescribed by the Association of American Railroads (AAR), Surface Transportation Board (STB), and National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). With the guide, new railroads can learn about important topics including:

  • Reporting Marks: These unique codes are assigned to individual companies for various tariff and accounting applications and are required by freight rail industry rules.

  • Industry Operating Requirements: To participate in the freight rail industry, railroads must follow industry rules that promote safety and efficient interchange.

  • Railinc Products and Services: Railinc operates more than 30 products lines for the freight rail industry, ranging from asset health solutions to financial data exchanges to tracing and messaging services.

  • Publications: Published by Railinc, the Association of American Railroads and the Transportation Technology Center Inc., these documents can help new railroads as they encounter issues or have questions as they begin operations.

The Guide also includes contact information such as titles, addresses, telephone/fax numbers, email addresses and web sites to help users locate the resources and the functional contacts referenced in the document.
