Equipment Health Management System
Railinc's Equipment Health Management System (EHMS) is a web-based application that communicates the condition of railroad equipment and sends alerts to the responsible parties when repairs are needed. Using data collected by wayside detectors throughout North America, EHMS identifies mechanical problems as they develop, allowing ample time to fix equipment before serious damage or accidents occur.
By enabling proactive equipment maintenance, EHMS reduces costly repairs, improves asset utilization, reduces infrastructure stress and improves rail safety. EHMS also enables car owners, railroads and equipment maintenance providers to report equipment repairs and collect repair history data. With EHMS, users always have access to accurate and up-to-date information on rail equipment alerts.
In partnership with the Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI), EHMS scrubs, stores and distributes information about equipment to rail carriers, car owners and other interested parties. The system takes alert data from five types of wayside detectors: Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD), Truck Hunting Detectors (THD), Acoustic Bearing Detectors (ABD), and Truck Performance (TPDG & TPDL). TTCI's InteRRIS system analyzes the data and puts them into four categories:
Window open level—advising that some degradation of wheel roundness has started.
Opportunistic level—giving equipment owners a chance to schedule repairs before they start causing damage.
Condemnable level—telling shops that wheels need to be replaced.
Mandatory Alert—telling carriers and car owners that high stresses are being placed on rails, requiring immediate action.
EHMS manages the communication of this information to all equipment owners and provides the mechanism for reporting repairs, completing the cycle.
